WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE? Emotional abuse - Ridiculing - Withholding affection - Blaming partner for problems - Threats of violence Physical violence causing bodily harm Marital Rape Threat or abuse of a spouse or person living as a spouse, ex-spouse, live-in roommate, child or relative Verbal Abuse Financial Abuse Sexual Abuse   HOW WIDESPREAD IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE? Half of all marriages involve at least one episode of domestic violence 15-28 million women are repeatedly abused; many suffer serious physical harm Police records indicate domestic disputes make up greatest percentage of calls and are the most dangerous. Over 70,000 women in Ohio may need protection from marital rape WHAT CAUSES DOMESTIC VIOLENCE? One or both marital partners may: Have low self-esteem Have unrealistic expectations of marriage Abuse and or neglect own children Be socially and emotionally isolated and withdrawn Be very dependent on or possessive of each other Have observed or been victim of violence as child Engage in abuse of alcohol / drugs Men wrestle with 3 central problems: loss of control. denial and minimization of their violence and tend to be personally and socially isolated. Both parties have not learned acceptable ways to resolve disputes DOMESTIC VIOLENCE STATISTICS Every 15 seconds a crime of battering occurs.      National Coalition Against Domestic Violence Up to 50% of all homeless women and children in      this country are fleeing domestic violence. Legal Reform Efforts for Battered Women 22–35% of all women who visit emergency rooms are      there for injuries related to abuse. American Medical Association Every year, domestic violence results in almost      100,000 days of hospitalizations, almost 30,000 emergency department      visits, and almost 40,000 visits to a physician. American Medical Association In 1998, about 1 million violent crimes were      committed against persons by their current or former spouses, boyfriends,      or girlfriends. National Crime Victimization Statistics 50% of all couples experience at least one      violent incident; for one in 24–30% of these couples, violence is a common      occurrence. National Coalition Against Domestic Violence 80% of violent juvenile and adult prisoners      experienced domestic violence as children. National Bureau of Justice Statistics Boys who have witnessed abuse of their mothers      are 10 times more likely to abuse their female partners as adults. Physical Violence in American Families Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury      to women between the ages of 15 and 44, more common than automobile      accidents, muggings, and cancer deaths combined.
